Joann Smith is the author of the collection of stories A Heaven of Their Choosing and the novel of historical fiction When I Was Boudicca.

Joann was born and raised in the Bronx, where she lives with her husband, daughter, and Westie. She earned a Master’s Degree in English from Lehman College, CUNY, and a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts: Fiction from Sarah Lawrence College.

Joann has taught writing at several colleges in New York and served as director of the Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College. Currently, she writes and edits for college alumni magazines and websites, and helps writers develop and revise their stories. She also reads submissions for Calyx Journal. Joann’s short stories have appeared in The Halcyone Literary ReviewAdelaide Literary MagazineTwo Hawks QuarterlyChagrin River Review, and Image: A Journal of Art and Religion, among other journals and anthologies. Her story “Tuesday Night at the Shop and Shoot” was anthologized in Lock and Load: Armed Fiction, from University of New Mexico Press. Joann’s story “Michael Rooney” was selected by the editors of Best American Short Stories 2000 as one of the 100 notable stories of the year.
